Nashville and New England Revolution made massive upsets last night, with the two teams eliminating the top teams in their respective conferences. Nashville was better than Toronto FC, while Revs defeated Philadelphia Union.
The Supporters’ Shield winners, Union, was a heavy favorite against the Revolution, but a four-minute blitz in the first half knocked out the home team who didn’t have a chance to consolidate and respond.
Adam Buksa in the 26th and Tajon Buchanan, four minutes later, were the scorers for the guests. Carles Gil set up both these goals, with the superb Spaniard playing arguably his best match this year. The Revolution played against this rival four times since the start of 2020, and in each game, they would suffer a defeat.
Though, when it mattered the most, the Revs beat Philly, and are now in the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they face Orlando City, on November 29th. The match takes place in Florida.
One other title contenders were also eliminated from the MLs Cup playoffs this Tuesday. Toronto FC suffered a shocking exit from the playoffs, as they lost at home against Nashville, 0-1. The only scorer in this matchup was Daniel Rios, who netted in the 108th minute, running onto one deflected shot and calmly putting it back into the net.
The Canadians were handicapped with the fact that they didn’t play for more than two weeks, while on the other side, Nashville already had playoff experience, as they eliminated Inter Miami in the play-in round. The next rivals of Garry Smith’s boys will be Columbus Crew, on the road.
The game at Lumen Field was eventful, with lots of excitement and action on both sides. Nico Lodeiro scored the opener for the hosts after 18 minutes. Shortly after, the current MVP, Carlos Vela, missed a penalty kick, which would see him leveling the score.
Three more goals took place in the latter part of the contest, with Raul Ruidiaz doubling the home side’s lead in the 66th minute. Eleven minutes later, Eduard Atuesta sparked some hope for the visitors, decreasing the gap, but that didn’t last for too long, as Jordan Morris sealed Seattle’s victory.
The Sounders await FC Dallas in the semis.
