On Friday, Twitter announced the acquisition of Squad, an app that allows you to share your screen and video chat with friends at the same time. According to TechCrunch, the entire team, including co-founders Esther Crawford and Ethan Sutin, will
The all-stock deal was prompted, in part, by the collapse of Uber’s ride-hailing business in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Postmates’ “beloved” brand is also stronger than Uber in a number of areas, including LA and the south west.
Uber’s purchase of Postmates, while approved by regulators, may cause some nervousness in the drivers and restaurants that use the service. Eater, earlier this summer, said that the deal will “condense the number of delivery app options to three,” reducing people’s ability to take their business elsewhere.
It doesn’t help that Uber has used its resources to help rob its drivers
As for the future of Kustomer, it sounds like Facebook will exercise a light touch on the company. “Facebook plans to support Kustomer’s operations by providing the resources it needs to scale its business, improve and innovate its product offering, and delight its customers,” the company said. Facebook is also quick to note that businesses won’t have to switch to Kustomer to manage their online communication tools. “We want businesses of all sizes and across all industries to discover the value of messaging — and having a vibrant partner ecosystem is critical in providing our customers with choices.”
Spotify is still determined to reign supreme in podcasts, and that means putting more ads in podcasts — like it or not. The company has acquired podcast platform heavyweight Megaphone with the aim of making Spotify’s ad insertion tech available to third-party podcast publishers “for the first time.” If publishers want it, they’ll have the option of monetizing their podcasts through Spotify (complete with tracking) instead of having to negotiate their own sponsorships.
The ad tech will be available “soon” after the Megaphone deal closes, Spotify said, although it didn’t say when it expected that to happen.
AMD expects the Xilinx deal to take a while to wrap up. It should close by the end of 2021, the company said. It’s expected to immediately add to AMD’s profits and cash, however, and the firm expects to save $300 million within 18 months of closing through shared costs, infrastructure and “streamlining common areas.” It’s not certain that job cuts will follow, but they wouldn’t be surprising.
The buyout gives AMD another major weapon in its fight against Intel, which was already involved in FPGAs thanks to its Altera deal. AMD was already gaining ground on Intel through its rapidly
Tonight South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix announced a $9 billion deal with Intel. It’s acquiring Intel’s “NAND memory and storage business, which includes the NAND SSD business, the NAND component and wafer business, and the Dalian NAND memory manufacturing facility in China.” If you’re wondering what this means for Intel’s speedy Optane SSDs, it will continue to hold onto that business, however as Tom’s Hardware points out, the technology is jointly developed by Intel and Micron, and manufactured entirely by Micron.
The deal is pending government approval, and both parties expect it to close by late next year. It
